@BasfromtheSide#43983 I don't want to discount your experience, but I have everything I can on direct debit and so far no-one ever complained about the bunq IBAN I entered on their site.
So I can only repeat myself: the companies that don't accept a normal IBAN are doing something else that all other parties do. So in this case using a third party service which isn't supported by every bank in the SEPA. They have to accept your IBAN though. But you might need to chat, tweet, call or send in a form.
I understand that you can't change all the companies you're dealing with because they are used by your town and you'd have to use them. But that even might be in your advantage as you can argue with your local council members that they are using a mandatory party which excludes people from using their free bank choice.
I don't think you can blame bunq that they are not using a thrid party which will costs them a lot of money Especially not when it's not needed at all because direct debits from bunq accounts already work. Why would bunq need to spent money so that some company can use a third party service? If you go that route, then I'm going to invent my own third party service and require every bank in the SEPA area to pay me 20 million euro a year to connect to it ;)
Btw, your navigation example is very apt. I have co-workers who have a navigation system in their car which is now basicly useless because they haven't received a map update for years. The car company says "sorry, too old we don't support it anymore" (the car is less than 4 years old!). That's what you get when companies force you to use one specific thing which is not supported by everyone.
In comparison I just use my smartphone where I can choose from several navigation apps and all of them are up to date with new roads, new signs and so on.
