  • nfc payments / google pay

Hi, after not using tap&pay for a while, at the cash register today I was disappointed to learn that this feature was silently disabled. Instead, bunq told me to try Google Pay. The thread on Together about using Google Pay has not been updated since 2019, and Google Pay is also not available in the Play Store. Bunq is actively advertising its app in the Play store when you search for 'Google Pay'. So there must be a way, right?

Please Bunq, how can I pay with my phone?

    Thank you, but that 'Add to Google Pay' banner shown in that post is missing in my app. What I tried:

    • installing Google Pay from Play store, but it is missing;
    • set payment preference in phone NFC settings to Google Pay and restart Bunq;
    • tried the former tap&pay card, a mastercard and a maestro card. None show the 'Add to Google Pay' banner
    • searched for other menu settings in Bunq app for reference to Google Pay, none found.

    I have a Xiaomi MI9, non-rooted, original and updated firmware, Android 10. Bunq updated to latest version.

      @Kars-Silver-Penguin#225879 Are you able to locate the Google Pay settings in your Android phone settings? At my phone it's under Settings > Google > Settings for Google apps > Google Pay

        I found Settings for Google Apps, but Google Pay is missing there. I am however able to select Google pay as default in the NFC settings

          @Kars-Silver-Penguin#225881 ...But still there is no Add to Google Pay banner in the Bunq app.

            @Kars-Silver-Penguin#225884 If you haven't been able to solve this, I would advise you to ask Private Support about your issue setting up Google Pay. Maybe they know more. At least from what you posted, it seems like to me you should be able to use Google Pay. You can get to support in the app by following these steps:

            1. Go to Profile
            2. Tap on Settings in the right corner on top
            3. Scroll to the bottom, tap on Get Support, then choose Personal Support

              Thank you Jacob, I already have. It is apparently an unknown problem and has been passed to the developers.

                It's think it is really sad that Bunq shelved tap & pay, and replaced it with a commercial alternative that is not working on all regular phones.

                  Adding a question to that topic. In austria mastercard supports google pay, why isnt it available with bunq?

                    Ok, heb hetzelfde probleem. Vroeger werkte de tap and pay van bunq prima, maar nu helemaal niet meer. Valt niet goed te rijmen dat bunq alsmaar duurder wordt en er functionaliteit wegvalt. Dat hoort natuurlijk andersom te zijn.

                      @Johannes-Maroon-Lynx-2208674643#226007 Funny Austria was the country that enlighten me on the disadvantages of signing the google pay terms and the amount of meta-data leaking to google, which made tap and pay so attractive.

                      In any case I am under the impression the Bunq mastercard is under Netherland number allocation therefore you will NOT be able to add it in Austrian Google-pay.

                        bunq has different number ranges for pretty much every EEA country, even for customers from Iceland. So that shouldn't be the problem. Or rather, it's probably actually the reason for you not being able to use Google Pay with your cards. Because bunq doesn't support Google Pay in Austria, and therefore Austrian bunq cards don't work. If you actually had Dutch bunq cards, pretty sure Google wouldn't mind if you added them to your wallet.

                          @Jakob-Y#226258 Dachte GPay wäre mittlerweile auch in Austria eingeführt?

                            @Flo1979#226261 GPay was introduced by Google in Austria at the same time as in the Netherlands. However, bunq does not support it in Austria, while it does in the Netherlands. And nobody knows why this is the case 🤦
