• Which card to choose. Please advice.

Hey BUNQers! =)
Just relocated to Berlin and opened bunq account. So I am totally new here.
I need to get a plastic card to receive my salary. In bunq app I can see only four options:

  • metal card (it is expensive, I don't want this metal stuff and subscription)
  • Mastercard credit (i also don't want any credit card, cause as I heard it is mentioned is SHUFA or smth like that)
  • Maestro debit (in app it is mentioned that it is for Netherlands and Belgium. It is not working in Germany?)
  • virtual card (well it is only for e-shopping)

so my question is what card should I choose? Are there any other debit options except the expensive metal one?

@New-Teal-Tiger-1431571177#213569 Hi Nikolai, willkommen in Deutschland! Und willkommen im Community-Forum von bunq!

Concerning the Mastercard Credit: Rest assured, with bunq you will never have any SCHUFA-related problems. They are a Dutch bank and they don't work with them at all. And on top of that, while they indeed have a Mastercard Credit, they don't give you any credit lines. So even if they had a relationship with SCHUFA, this card would not need get reported or anything like that. For you as a user, it works exactly like a debit card. For the merchant, it is a credit card. Giving you the advantage of better acceptance at car rentals, hotels etc.

And about the Maestro card: This card works in every country, but only in stores where it is accepted. While in Netherlands and Belgium you won't be able to do much without a Maestro card, in Germany you can generally use both Mastercard and Maestro in most stores. So it's not as necessary here, but of course you can use it without problems.

About the Metal card: This is also a Mastercard Credit. But, same as the plastic Mastercard Credit, it also works for you fully as a debit card and you can not fall in debt. So, if you don't need the bling ✨, you can just go for the Mastercard Credit and you get the "same card", just in a different packaging. And btw: The Metal Card itself is free, the only requirement is pre-paying for your bunq plan. If you plan on staying with bunq anyway, there's not really a difference monetarily, as you need at least the easyMoney plan anyways to fully use bunq as your bank account.

And just to finish this with a little information about the Online/Virtual cards: These are also just Mastercard Credits, and indeed they can even be converted to real physical cards at anytime after creation. They're great if you do most your shopping with Apple Pay/Google Pay and online. No need to produce a plastic card if you pay with your phone all the time anyway, right?

And now: the choice is yours! If there was anything unclear, feel free to ask :)

So you opened a bunq account?! Well the good news is, within your account subscription you can order 3 cards for free (except for the metal card).
Maestro is also working in Germany, and the Mastercard is handy to use for online purchases as wel. I would just order both physical cards and be prepared for all situations you might meet.
By the way Metal is not really expensive. If you would decide to keep banking with bunq for the coming years this metal card is free if you pay the subscription for 2 years (easy money) in advance.

Additional question: Do I need two metal cards for business and personal accounts, or can i get one card (with 2 pins)

          3 years later

          Hi Guys,

I already have a business account at Bunq and I'm now thinking of getting a personal one as well (instead of my current personal bank account). I am unsure what card(s) to get. So I live abroad but I am regularly in the Netherlands as well. My main question is, can I go with just the Credit Mastercard or do I need the maestro (or credit debit) to pay in grocery stores and other shops?

          Looking forward to the answer

@New-Green-Bear-1117625748#285071 In the Netherlands, the Mastercard credit isn't accepted everywhere. So in the Netherlands, you need a Maestro or Mastercard debit.
